Bengaluru: A controversy has emerged in Bengaluru after a video allegedly showing inmates using mobile phones and watching television inside Parappana Agrahara Central Prison surfaced online. The incident has raised serious concerns about security lapses within the prison system.
Following the emergence of the footage, authorities have suspended three prison staff members and initiated a detailed investigation into the matter.
Video shows inmates accessing restricted items
The video, which has circulated widely on social media, appears to show inmates using mobile phones, watching television, and accessing streaming platforms. In one part of the footage, inmates are seen casually discussing sports events, suggesting access to real-time information and entertainment.
Officials believe the video was recorded on March 27 by inmates lodged in connection with a serious criminal case. It is suspected that the footage was later shared with contacts outside the prison, leading to its public circulation.
Concealment method under scrutiny
Preliminary findings indicate that mobile phones were hidden in an underground pipeline area near the toilet block. This method of concealment reportedly helped inmates evade routine checks conducted by prison authorities.
Investigators believe this may not be an isolated incident but part of a more organised pattern of smuggling and concealment within the prison premises.
Concerns over possible internal involvement
Authorities have expressed concern over possible involvement of prison staff in facilitating the breach. The nature of the concealment and continued access to restricted items has raised suspicions of internal collusion at the ground level.
At the same time, officials are also examining whether the incident could have been orchestrated to tarnish the image of Alok Kumar, Director General of Police (Prisons and Correctional Services), especially in light of recent efforts to tighten prison security.
FIR registered, phones seized
Following the incident, police have registered an FIR and seized the mobile phones seen in the video. A comprehensive investigation is underway to determine the extent of the breach and identify all those responsible.
Authorities are also reviewing existing security protocols to prevent recurrence of similar incidents.
Three staff members suspended
As part of immediate action, three wardens have been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty. The suspended personnel have been identified as Shivanand Karalabatti, Niranjan A Kamat, and Hanumanthappa Hadapad.
Officials stated that further disciplinary action may follow depending on the findings of the ongoing inquiry.
