Bengaluru: A 48-year-old pourakarmika, Sarojamma, lost her life early Tuesday morning after being hit by a tipper truck while crossing Chord Road under the Shivanagar flyover near Dhobi Ghat junction. The fatal accident occurred around 6:25 am, as she was en route to the BBMP ward office to mark her biometric attendance.
Sarojamma, a resident of Peenya, was moments away from a major life milestone—on May 1, she was set to receive her job regularisation certificate, officially making her a BBMP employee after 20 years of dedicated work. Tragically, she didn’t live to see that day.
According to eyewitnesses, the signal had just turned green when the tipper lorry sped forward, running over Sarojamma. The driver fled the scene after abandoning the vehicle. Her body was shifted to Victoria Hospital for a postmortem.
The incident sparked outrage among fellow pourakarmikas, with over 150 gathering at the spot to demand justice and compensation for her family. “She dedicated her life to this work. The government must ensure one of her sons is given a job,” said Mahesh, a pourakarmika supervisor.
Sarojamma’s daughter Gowri, a homemaker in Banashankari, expressed grief and appealed for BBMP support. “She lived with my brother. We lost our father long ago. We hope for some help during this difficult time,” she said.
The Vijayanagar traffic police have filed a case and are investigating the hit-and-run.
