Bengaluru: A 26-year-old truck driver allegedly died by suicide after being booked for drunk driving during a routine police inspection in southern Bengaluru, police officials said on Sunday.
The deceased has been identified as Shanmugam, a native of Tamil Nadu.
Routine check leads to action
According to police, the incident began on Saturday around 11 pm when Shanmugam was stopped near the Outer Ring Road (ORR) during a routine drink-and-drive inspection conducted by traffic personnel.
The truck he was driving, which was registered in Tamil Nadu, was subjected to standard checks. During the inspection, Shanmugam was found to be under the influence of alcohol beyond the permissible legal limits.
Following the violation, police impounded the vehicle and issued a notice to the driver as per procedure.
Body found inside impounded vehicle
In the early hours of Sunday, police received information that Shanmugam had allegedly taken his own life. He was found hanging inside the impounded truck.
Officers rushed to the spot and conducted preliminary procedures before shifting the body for post-mortem examination.
Investigation underway
The case is currently being investigated by the JP Nagar Police Station. A senior police officer stated that the family of the deceased has been informed about the incident.
“As of now, no complaint has been received from the family. Further investigation is underway,” the officer said.
Police are examining the circumstances leading to the incident, including the sequence of events after the vehicle was impounded.
