In a major burglary case that has shocked Bengaluru, a Nepali couple employed as domestic workers allegedly escaped with valuables worth ₹1.8 crore from the residence of S Ramesh Babu, a businessman and political figure, in Lal Bahadur Shastri Nagar near HAL.
The theft occurred while the family was on a pilgrimage to Tirupati. The accused, Raj and Deepa, had only been working at the home for three months but had already earned the family’s confidence. They were left in charge when the family departed early on May 27.
Authorities suspect the duo used false identities as no ID proof was collected during their hiring. The couple had been introduced by a former employee, Prem, who had worked with the family for over 18 months. Before returning to his hometown, Prem introduced another man as his replacement, who later brought in Raj and Deepa.
The incident was discovered on May 28 when a family friend visited and found the main gate and front door open with no sign of the staff. Upon inspection via video call, Babu noticed damaged locks. The family rushed back home by 4 pm and found gold, diamonds, ₹10 lakh cash, and even a licensed firearm missing.
Police believe this was a well-orchestrated heist involving other conspirators. A case has been filed under Section 306 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for theft by employees. A dedicated team is tracking the suspects.
