The Karnataka government is moving forward with plans to integrate Tumakuru district into Bengaluru city, with State Home Minister G. Parameshwara confirming that a formal proposal has been submitted. The initiative aims to rename Tumakuru as Bengaluru North district, aligning with the capital’s fast-paced urban expansion.
Parameshwara highlighted that Bengaluru’s growth has already spread beyond Nelamangala, with Tumakuru just 30 km away, making its inclusion a practical step in managing the metropolitan sprawl. He noted that global recognition of “Bengaluru North” would be simpler for outsiders, citing comparisons with international cities like New York.
Preparations are ongoing to bring 14 gram panchayats under the BBMP’s jurisdiction, further strengthening Bengaluru’s administrative reach. Plans are also underway for Tumakuru’s city governance to expand, complementing the broader urban development blueprint.
Praising Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, Parameshwara referenced the approved plan to merge Ramanagara with Bengaluru South district, noting that renaming districts significantly influences perceptions and development opportunities.
In a related move, Parameshwara revealed that ₹5 crore from the Smart City project has been earmarked for building a ‘Welcome’ arch on the National Highway in Tumakuru. He has formally requested clearance from Union Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari for its construction.
The restructuring reflects the state’s ambition to create a more unified, strategically planned Bengaluru Metropolitan Region, potentially incorporating Ramanagara, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur in the future.
