Bengaluru : A Bengaluru court has sentenced two men to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment (RI) for the kidnapping and rape of a 17-year-old girl. The court has also ordered Rs 7 lakh compensation for the victim.
The case was heard by a special court dealing with offences against children under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. The court’s verdict marks a significant development in the case involving the sexual assault of a minor.
According to The New Indian Express, two of the accused were convicted and sentenced to 20 years’ rigorous imprisonment. However, Accused Nos. 2 and 4 remain absconding.
Court orders compensation for victim
Along with the prison sentence, the court directed that Rs 7 lakh be provided as compensation to the victim. Compensation in cases involving offences against children is intended to provide support to victims who may face emotional, psychological and other consequences following the crime.
The punishment and compensation order underline the seriousness with which offences against minors are treated under the law.
Two accused still absconding
The judicial proceedings have not resulted in the apprehension of all those named as accused in the case. Accused Nos. 2 and 4 are still absconding, according to the report.
Authorities will have to continue efforts to trace and apprehend them in accordance with the law. The conviction of the two accused nevertheless represents an important stage in the proceedings.
POCSO law provides special protection
The POCSO Act provides specific legal protection to children against sexual offences and establishes procedures for dealing with such cases. Special courts have been established to ensure that offences against children receive dedicated judicial attention.
