A ‘site dedication’ ceremony for the upcoming US Consulate in Bengaluru is scheduled for January 17, according to a social media invitation. However, the exact location of the consulate will be officially revealed during the event. In the interim, the consulate will operate temporarily from the JW Marriott Hotel on Vittal Mallya Road in the city, where it will begin processing visa applications.
Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya previously shared on social media that the consulate would begin operations in January. He highlighted that Bengaluru, a major IT hub generating 40% of India’s IT revenue, had long been without a US Consulate, forcing residents to travel to Chennai or Hyderabad for visa services. Surya emphasized that addressing this gap was a priority during his tenure as MP.
The US Consulate’s future facility will eventually replace the temporary location at JW Marriott and provide a dedicated space for consular services. Currently, the United States Commercial Service (USCS) operates from the same hotel.
MP Surya also noted that the new consulate would benefit 4 to 5 lakh people annually in Karnataka, eliminating the need for costly travel to other cities for US visa services. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s involvement during his 2023 US visit for helping to finalize the consulate’s establishment, a move welcomed by US Ambassador Eric Garcetti, who acknowledged the importance of the new consulate for Bengaluru’s tech-driven population.
