A viral post on social media has reignited concerns about the treatment of newcomers in Bengaluru after allegations surfaced that an auto-rickshaw driver extorted money from two young visitors shortly after they arrived in the city.
The claims were made by an engineer named Sanu on X, where he recounted the alleged ordeal of two teenage boys who had travelled from a village and were visiting Bengaluru for the first time.
₹50 ride allegedly became ₹3,000 demand
According to the post, the boys arrived at Sir M Visvesvaraya Terminal railway station and hired an auto-rickshaw for what they believed would be a short journey costing around ₹50.
However, the driver allegedly demanded ₹3,000 after reaching the destination. When the teenagers questioned the amount, the situation reportedly escalated into threats and intimidation.
The post further alleged that the boys were physically assaulted and pressured into paying the money despite having little understanding of local transport fares.
Social media users express concern
The allegations quickly gained traction online, with many users expressing anger and disappointment over the reported incident.
Several commenters said such experiences could damage Bengaluru’s reputation among tourists, students and professionals arriving in the city for education or employment opportunities.
Others urged authorities to take stricter action against instances of overcharging and harassment by transport operators.
Concerns over visitor experiences
While the allegations remain based on a social media account and official confirmation is awaited, the incident has once again highlighted recurring complaints about auto-rickshaw fare disputes in Bengaluru.
The city, known as India’s technology hub, attracts thousands of students, job seekers and entrepreneurs every year. Many social media users noted that ensuring a safe and welcoming experience for first-time visitors is essential for maintaining Bengaluru’s image as a global destination.
Authorities have not yet issued a statement regarding the claims.
