A viral social media video has raised awareness about a clever distraction scam targeting motorists, after a Delhi-based content creator captured what appeared to be an attempted theft in East Delhi’s Laxmi Nagar area.

The video, which has garnered more than 36 million views online, shows how scammers allegedly use cash placed on the road to distract drivers and steal valuables from their vehicles.

How the scam works

Content creator Tushar Bhalla shared footage of the incident while driving through a busy street. According to him, a stranger tapped on his car window and informed him that money had fallen near his vehicle.

Instead of immediately stepping out to collect the cash, Bhalla checked his mirrors and noticed another man waiting behind his car.

“I realised it was a setup,” he explained, alleging that while one person distracted the driver, an accomplice could use the opportunity to open a rear door and steal belongings such as laptops, bags or other valuables.

Presence of mind prevented theft

Bhalla said his instincts alerted him that something was unusual about the situation.

He noted that on a crowded road, it is uncommon for strangers to go out of their way to point out loose cash. His decision to remain alert and observe his surroundings helped him identify the suspected scam before falling victim to it.

The content creator later shared the video to warn motorists about similar tactics.

Netizens praise awareness message

The clip quickly gained traction online, with many users thanking Bhalla for highlighting a scam that could easily catch unsuspecting drivers off guard.

Several commenters said they would be more cautious while travelling and ensure their vehicle doors remain centrally locked, particularly in crowded urban areas.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions on road safety and the importance of staying vigilant against distraction-based thefts that continue to target commuters in busy city locations
