Bengaluru: A video of an elderly woman energetically using outdoor gym equipment at a public park in Bengaluru has gone viral on social media, prompting fresh discussions on the need for safety guidelines at public exercise facilities.

The 10-second clip, shared by Bengaluru-based X user Sandeep Parswanath, shows the woman in a saree using an air swing exercise machine with rapid back-and-forth movements while several people, including children, watch nearby.

Viral clip raises safety concerns

Sharing the video, Parswanath questioned whether such equipment should be used without supervision, particularly by senior citizens.

“Is this not dangerous without supervision? Who will take responsibility if something happens? BBMP should install clear usage guidelines and safety instructions on boards next to each outdoor gym equipment in parks,” he wrote.

The post quickly gained traction, with many users echoing his concerns and urging the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to display clear instructions on how to use outdoor fitness equipment safely.

Social media divided

The viral video triggered mixed reactions online. While several users supported the demand for safety boards, arguing that improper use of exercise equipment could lead to accidents, others felt that individuals should exercise personal responsibility while using public facilities.

Some users also pointed out that outdoor gyms are increasingly popular among senior citizens and should include basic safety instructions, recommended age guidelines and information on proper usage to minimise the risk of injuries.

Call for safer public fitness spaces

The incident has renewed conversations about improving safety standards at Bengaluru’s parks, where outdoor gyms have become popular among residents seeking free and accessible fitness options.

Many users said simple measures such as instructional boards, warning signs and regular maintenance could help ensure that people of all ages use the equipment safely while encouraging healthy lifestyles.
