A viral vox pop video featuring people unable to name Kannada as Bengaluru’s official language has triggered a strong backlash from Kannadigas. The clip, allegedly shot in Mumbai, shows individuals guessing Hindi, English, Tamil, or Malayalam—but never Kannada.

The video has reignited concerns about Kannada’s diminishing presence in Karnataka’s capital. Many Kannadigas took to social media, lamenting how their language is being sidelined while they have embraced other tongues like Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi.

One user pointed to a common misconception: “Many believe Hindi is India’s national language, and South India is either ‘Madrasis’ or ‘Communists.’ Telugu gained fame due to cinema, but Kannada remains ignored.”

Some expressed despair, calling for efforts to instill Kannada pride in the younger generation. Others noted that Karnataka’s identity remains lesser-known even among South Indians.

However, a few took a balanced view, arguing that linguistic ignorance is widespread. “Ask Bengaluru residents about Mumbai’s official language, and most will say Hindi instead of Marathi. It’s a nationwide issue.”

The video has intensified discussions about linguistic preservation, fueling calls for stronger Kannada advocacy in Bengaluru.
