Every time Karnataka gets a new Chief Minister, one of the first challenges extends beyond governance—finding an official residence. Unlike several other Indian states that have a designated Chief Minister’s residence, Karnataka relies on a limited number of government-owned bungalows near Vidhana Soudha, leading to fresh discussions with every change in leadership.
The issue has once again come into focus after Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar selected the historic Kumara Krupa bungalow as his official residence and office.
No permanent residence for Karnataka Chief Ministers
Karnataka does not have a permanent, officially designated residence for its Chief Minister. Instead, the state government maintains a small pool of heritage bungalows in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha, from which the incumbent Chief Minister chooses based on availability and personal preference.
This arrangement has often sparked public debate and political speculation whenever a new Chief Minister assumes office, with discussions ranging from the condition of the properties to their historical and administrative significance.
The nearly 160-year-old Kumara Krupa bungalow, chosen by Shivakumar, is among the city’s prominent government residences and has housed several senior political leaders over the years.
Historic bungalows at the centre of politics
Many of Bengaluru’s government bungalows date back to the colonial era and are considered architecturally significant. Besides serving as official residences, they often function as meeting venues for cabinet discussions, administrative reviews and interactions with visitors.
With only a handful of such properties available, the allocation of these residences has frequently become part of Karnataka’s political narrative whenever leadership changes.
The renewed focus on the Chief Minister’s residence has also highlighted the state’s unique administrative tradition, where every new government must balance practicality, heritage conservation and official protocol while selecting its seat of governance.
