A late-night robbery attempt at a supermarket on Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road ended with one suspect being arrested after alert staff members and members of the public intervened to stop the accused from escaping.
The incident occurred around 10 pm on Friday in Arekere when three men allegedly entered the supermarket posing as regular customers.
Suspicious activity caught on camera
According to police, the trio filled two shopping trolleys with groceries and allegedly concealed additional items inside their clothing. Their behaviour reportedly drew the attention of the supermarket cashier, who noticed suspicious movements through CCTV footage.
When confronted, the accused allegedly rushed towards the cashier and threatened him with a knife. Police said a staff member who attempted to prevent their escape was also attacked during the confrontation.
Public helps nab suspect
The cashier and other employees immediately raised an alarm, attracting the attention of passers-by and nearby residents.
As the suspects fled the premises, members of the public chased them and managed to catch one of the accused before handing him over to the police.
The arrested suspect has been identified as Faizal (21), a resident of Tilaknagar.
Search on for two accused
Police said the other two suspects, who are also believed to be residents of the same locality, managed to escape from the scene. Efforts are currently underway to trace and apprehend them.
A robbery case has been registered at the Puttenahalli Police Station, and investigators are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the full sequence of events.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns about crimes allegedly committed under the influence of alcohol, as well as the safety risks faced by retail employees during late-night business operations.
Police have urged commercial establishments to remain vigilant and ensure adequate security measures, particularly during closing hours.
