BENGALURU: In a rather unusual turn of events, the Karnataka High Court has intervened in a domestic dispute involving a Bengaluru man accused by his wife of prioritising their pet cat over her, halting further investigation into the matter.

The case, initially filed under IPC Section 498A (which deals with cruelty and dowry demands), took a bizarre turn as the wife alleged that her husband’s bond with their cat led to frequent arguments, including instances of the cat scratching her. The couple found themselves entangled in legal proceedings, but the court noted that the primary issue was not about dowry or violence but the husband’s attention to the pet.

Justice M Nagaprasanna, hearing the case, emphasized that the allegations did not meet the legal criteria for cruelty under Section 498A, as the dispute appeared to be a domestic quarrel rather than a case of criminal behaviour. The court also highlighted how such cases, stemming from minor disagreements, waste valuable resources of the criminal justice system.

This case comes in the wake of several high-profile incidents, including a recent suicide case in Bengaluru involving a tech executive, which underscores the emotional toll that marital disputes can take.
