A 42-year-old woman lost her life and three others sustained serious injuries in a devastating road accident near Bashettihalli in Doddaballapur taluk of Bengaluru Rural district after an SUV collided with a scooty travelling in the wrong direction.
The incident, which was captured on CCTV, has once again highlighted concerns over wrong-side driving and road safety.
CCTV captures fatal collision
According to police, the accident occurred when an SUV travelling at high speed crashed into a scooty carrying three members of the same family. CCTV footage reportedly shows the two-wheeler being ridden on the wrong side of the road.
The impact was so severe that all three riders were thrown several metres into the air. None of the occupants on the scooty appeared to be wearing helmets at the time of the accident.
The deceased has been identified as Anita (42), a resident of Gauribidanur. She was declared dead after being taken to a hospital.
Three others undergoing treatment
Three people, including two family members travelling on the scooty and one occupant of the SUV, suffered grievous injuries. They were shifted to a private hospital in Bengaluru, where they are undergoing treatment.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the collision occurred as the SUV approached from the opposite direction while the scooty was travelling against the flow of traffic. Police are also examining the speed of the SUV as part of the investigation.
Police begin investigation
A case has been registered at the Doddaballapur Rural Police Station, and further investigations are underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the fatal crash.
Police have urged motorists to follow traffic rules, avoid wrong-side driving and wear protective helmets to reduce the risk of fatal injuries in road accidents.
