Bengaluru: An 18-year-old woman sustained multiple stab injuries after she was allegedly attacked by her former boyfriend at her residence in Bengaluru’s Varthur area on Thursday morning. The accused later allegedly attempted to end his own life by slitting his neck.

Police have identified the accused as Bande Nawaz, a driver, who has been booked for attempt to murder under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Both the accused and the victim are undergoing treatment at separate hospitals.

Attack followed rejection of marriage proposal

According to police, the accused and the victim had studied together at a private school and had known each other for the past three years. They were previously in a relationship, but the woman had reportedly rejected Nawaz’s marriage proposal after her parents arranged her marriage to another man.

The incident occurred around 9.30 am at the woman’s home in Ramagondanahalli, Varthur. Police said Nawaz entered the house and allegedly stabbed her multiple times on the neck, hands, palms, ribs and thighs.

Victim escaped despite injuries

Investigators said the woman’s parents were away from home at the time of the attack. Before assaulting her, the accused allegedly locked her two younger brothers inside a room.

Despite suffering serious injuries, the woman managed to escape from the house and raised an alarm. Neighbours immediately alerted the police, who rushed to the spot and shifted both the victim and the accused to hospitals.

The woman is receiving treatment at Manipal Hospital and is said to be recovering, while the accused is undergoing treatment at Vaidheyi Hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by slitting his neck.

Police said the attack was triggered by the woman’s refusal to marry the accused. Further investigation is underway.
