Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar has said that Bengaluru’s growing global prominence is reflected in the fact that many world leaders now choose to visit the city before travelling to the national capital.

Speaking at the 28th Convocation of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS), Shivakumar recalled remarks made by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee during the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Bengaluru International Airport.

Bengaluru’s rise on the global stage

According to Shivakumar, Vajpayee had observed that world leaders traditionally arrived in Delhi before visiting other parts of the country.

“Today, the situation has changed. World leaders first come to Bengaluru and then go to Delhi,” Shivakumar said, highlighting the city’s emergence as a global hub for technology, innovation, education and business.

His remarks underscored Bengaluru’s transformation over the years into one of India’s most internationally recognised cities.

A memorable university connection

Reflecting on his personal journey, Shivakumar spoke about his association with the university and described his graduation as one of the most cherished moments of his life.

He said that despite serving in various governments and holding different ministerial responsibilities over the years, earning his Master’s degree in Political Science remained among his happiest achievements.

The Deputy Chief Minister encouraged graduating students to value education and continue contributing positively to society through their professional careers.

Healthcare plays a vital role

Highlighting the importance of the healthcare sector, Shivakumar described healthcare as a system dedicated to reducing suffering and protecting all sections of society.

He praised medical professionals and healthcare workers for their role in improving quality of life and strengthening communities.

The convocation ceremony witnessed the participation of graduates, faculty members and dignitaries, celebrating academic excellence and the contributions of future healthcare professionals.
