Bengaluru: Pre-monsoon activity has intensified across Karnataka, bringing a mix of relief from scorching summer heat and concerns over thunderstorms, as the India Meteorological Department issued a yellow alert for 25 districts, including coastal regions.

Widespread rainfall is expected over the next five days, signalling a gradual transition towards the monsoon season.

Heavy rainfall recorded across districts

In the past 32 hours, Hassan recorded the highest rainfall at 61.5 mm, indicating strong pre-monsoon activity. Other districts also witnessed notable showers, including Yadgir (36 mm), Raichur (34 mm), Koppal (33.5 mm) and Haveri (26 mm).

Rainfall was also recorded in Dakshina Kannada (21.5 mm), Tumakuru (21 mm), Vijayapura (18 mm), Chitradurga (15 mm) and Kalaburagi (14.5 mm), showing widespread distribution across the state.

Coastal and Malnad regions to receive more rain

In the coastal belt, including Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, humid and cloudy conditions are expected despite daytime sunshine. Evening thunderstorms are likely, particularly in ghat foothill areas.

The Malnad region, including Kodagu, is expected to receive regular evening showers, with rainfall activity likely to intensify further from April 29. Border areas of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga may also witness thunderstorms.

Rain forecast across north and south interior

In north interior Karnataka, districts such as Belagavi, Dharwad, Haveri and Ballari are expected to receive evening and night-time showers. Other districts may also experience rainfall depending on wind pressure patterns.

While high temperatures are likely to persist in south interior districts, thunderstorms are expected to bring intermittent relief starting April 29.

Yellow alert across multiple days

The IMD has outlined a multi-day alert schedule:

  • April 29: Yellow alert for 25 districts, with moderate rainfall expected in Bidar, Kalaburagi, Vijayapura, Belagavi and Uttara Kannada.
  • April 30: Alert continues for 24 districts, including Udupi and Dakshina Kannada.
  • May 1: Alert for 19 districts, with rainfall expected in Raichur, Koppal, Vijayanagara, Davanagere, Chitradurga, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Hassan, Kodagu, Mysuru and Mandya.

Bengaluru experiences light showers

In Bengaluru, light rain was reported in several areas, including Majestic and central zones. A yellow alert has been issued for the city for the next four days.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during peak rainfall hours, as sudden showers and lightning may pose risks.

Relief and caution go hand in hand

The pre-monsoon rains have provided much-needed relief from intense heat across Karnataka. However, authorities have warned of potential hazards, including thunderstorms, lightning and waterlogging in low-lying urban areas.

Farmers and plantation workers have been specifically advised to avoid open fields during lightning activity, while motorists have been urged to exercise caution on slippery roads.

Conclusion

With rainfall activity expected to intensify further by early May, Karnataka appears to be steadily transitioning towards the monsoon season. While the showers bring respite from heat, adherence to safety advisories remains crucial to minimise risks.
