Bengaluru’s Second Airport: Ministers in a Turf Battle
A rift seems to be emerging between Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar and Home Minister Dr. G. Parameshwara over the location of Bengaluru’s second international airport.
Shivakumar has proposed a site between Bidadi and Harohalli, close to his native Kanakapura. However, Parameshwara remains skeptical about its approval by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).
In contrast, Parameshwara is pushing for Tumakuru, situated along the Bengaluru-Pune NH-40. He claims to have identified two viable locations that align with regulatory norms. Addressing the media on Wednesday, he stated that while Industries and Infrastructure Development Minister M.B. Patil is handling the project, the final decision is pending. “There are multiple options under review, and all must meet DGCA requirements. We have recommended Tumakuru, while others have their preferences. The aviation authority will assess feasibility,” he remarked.
Shivakumar, on the other hand, emphasized that no site has been officially chosen yet. “The Industries Minister is still examining the proposal and hasn’t discussed the matter with me or the Chief Minister. A conclusive decision will follow the Global Investors Meet (GIM),” he clarified.
Meanwhile, Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, responding to former PM H.D. Deve Gowda in the Rajya Sabha, affirmed that the central government would proceed once Karnataka submits its formal proposal.
