Bengaluru: Karnataka is set to receive a ₹3,600 crore investment from US-based semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials over the next 10 years, in a project that is expected to create around 1,000 jobs and strengthen Bengaluru’s position in India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
The investment will come up at Bengaluru Signature Business Park, with the company planning to focus on research and development, semiconductor equipment manufacturing and software technologies used in chip production.
Karnataka Industries Minister M B Patil announced the investment on September 15 after the state government received the company’s signed memorandum of understanding (MoU). The project is expected to be the first industrial project of its kind at Bengaluru Signature Business Park.
Applied Materials plans decade-long investment
According to the plan, Applied Materials will invest ₹3,600 crore in Karnataka over the coming decade. The company is a major global supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and materials engineering solutions used across the chip production process.
The proposed project will have a focus on three major areas — research and development, manufacturing of equipment used in semiconductor production, and software technologies supporting chip manufacturing.
The project is expected to generate approximately 1,000 employment opportunities once established.
The investment comes as India seeks to expand its semiconductor ecosystem and develop capabilities across different stages of chip manufacturing, including equipment, design, research and engineering.
Bengaluru Signature Business Park gets first project
The Applied Materials project will be located at Bengaluru Signature Business Park. According to the Karnataka Industries Minister’s office, it will be the first industrial project of its kind to come up at the business park.
Patil said Applied Materials’ expertise in materials engineering would help strengthen the supporting ecosystem for semiconductor manufacturing in Karnataka.
The company already has a significant technology and engineering presence in Bengaluru. Its latest investment will add another layer to the city’s semiconductor capabilities, particularly in equipment development, validation and related software technologies.
Applied Materials already has a Bengaluru presence
Applied Materials has been operating in India for more than two decades, with Bengaluru serving as one of its important operational centres.
Earlier this year, the company inaugurated an 800,000-plus-square-foot campus in Bengaluru, expanding its capabilities in semiconductor equipment design, testing and validation.
Its India Validation Center in Bengaluru supports semiconductor equipment product design, simulation, testing and validation, including capabilities related to 300mm wafer processing.
The company also operates an AI Center of Excellence in Chennai.
The expanded Karnataka investment therefore builds on an existing technology and engineering base rather than representing Applied Materials’ first entry into the Indian semiconductor sector.
Focus on research and chip-production technology
Unlike an investment focused solely on producing finished semiconductor chips, the proposed Applied Materials project will concentrate on technologies and equipment supporting semiconductor production.
This includes equipment manufacturing, research and development and software used in chip production.
Semiconductor manufacturing involves a complex supply chain covering materials, equipment, design, fabrication, testing and packaging. Companies supplying specialised equipment play an important role in this ecosystem because chip manufacturers require advanced systems for processing and validating wafers and semiconductor components.
The Karnataka project is therefore expected to contribute to the state’s broader efforts to develop capabilities beyond conventional technology services and into advanced manufacturing and semiconductor engineering.
