The time has passed for you to complete the Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements for your FASTag. Starting on Monday, April 1, owners of vehicles with multiple FAST tags will no longer be able to use the older ones. Within the framework of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) ‘One Vehicle, One FASTag’ initiative, the other FASTags have been deactivated in an effort to streamline toll collection and eliminate the need for multiple electronic toll documents for vehicles. The deadline was originally set for February 29, 2024, but it was extended until March 31 due to the Paytm issue, during which the RBI requested that the digital payment platform stop accepting new users.
“Multiple FASTags won’t work… People who have multiple FASTags for one vehicle won’t be able to use all of them from today (April 1),” an NHAI official told news agency PTI.
FASTag is an electronic toll collection system in India, operated by the NHAI. It employs Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for making toll payments directly from the prepaid or savings account linked to it or directly toll owner.
With a penetration rate of around 98 per cent and over eight crore users, FASTag has revolutionised the electronic toll collection system in the country.
With the help of FASTag, pre-paid vehicle tags, traffic can flow continuously without stopping at toll booths. Usually, the credit card-sized document is attached to the car’s windshield.
To improve the effectiveness of the electronic toll collection system and enable smooth mobility at toll plazas, the FASTag KYC check was implemented. The highways body claimed that it took the action after learning that a specific vehicle had received multiple FASTags and that the RBI’s directive had been broken by FASTags being issued without KYC.
