A former software engineer at Meta has attracted widespread attention online after leaving the technology industry to run a Hokkien Mee food stall in Singapore.
Alvin Tan, who previously worked at the social media giant, said he chose to walk away from a lucrative career because he no longer found software engineering fulfilling.
From Meta to a hawker stall
Tan’s story gained traction after it was featured by financial adviser and content creator Louisa Tay on Instagram.
In the video, Tan candidly explained that he left Meta because he found software engineering “boring” despite it being a dream job for many aspiring professionals.
He noted that frequent restructuring and uncertainty within large technology companies also influenced his thinking about exploring other opportunities.
Choosing passion over pay
Tan acknowledged that his current earnings are significantly lower than what he earned at Meta.
According to him, his software engineering salary was at least two to three times higher than his present income from the food business.
Despite the financial sacrifice, he said he has no regrets about pursuing a path that gives him greater personal satisfaction.
Building a business with family support
Tan now runs his Hokkien Mee stall, Umami Bomb, in Singapore’s Geylang district with support from his girlfriend, who helps manage day-to-day operations.
He revealed that operating a small business comes with challenges, including long working hours, reduced social time and lower disposable income.
His parents initially doubted whether he could adapt to the physically demanding work after spending years in air-conditioned offices, but he has continued running the business for more than a year.
Story inspires social media users
The career change sparked widespread reactions online, with many praising Tan for prioritising passion over a conventional career path.
Others highlighted how skills and opportunities can evolve over time, encouraging people to remain open to new directions in life.
Tan’s advice to those considering a similar move is simple: do not give up easily, stay optimistic and prioritise health while pursuing your goals.
