New Mangalore Port Authority celebrates World Environment Day

Mangaluru: New Mangalore Port Authority today commemorated World Environment Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and encouraging action for the protection of the planet. Dr A. V. Ramana, Chairman, NMPA inaugurated the program by lighting the lamp in August presence of Chief Guest, Dr Ravi, Environmental Officer, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Mangalore & Guest of Honor, Shri K. G. Nath, Dy. Chairman, NMPA.

Dr Ravi, Environmental Officer, KSPCB presented on Mission LiFE an initiative towards protecting Environment. He called for restraint in using single-use plastics which is having the majority impact on the environment. He also recalled the lifestyle of his ancestors who gave importance to the environment and created traditions & customs to safeguard the ecosystem.

Dr A. V. Ramana, Chairman, NMPA in his presidential speech mentioned the harm caused by mankind to the environment. He called for stronger law enforcement in controlling environmental pollution. He spoke about the Panchamruth Scheme of Govt. Of India which emphasizes restricting carbon emission intensity to less than 45% by 2030 & by 2070 net zero carbon emissions.

He expressed his happiness and pride in saying that under the Government’s Green Initiatives, the Port is currently handling 86% of the cargo mechanically which is powered by electricity, this maximum carbon omission is controlled to the maximum extent, Port is fully solar-powered self-sustained in generating electricity for its consumption, rainwater harvesting done in the port for usage, transforming lighting system to LED and save energy, introducing electric vehicles, vermicompost unit for waste management, sewage treatment plant”.

Port under the concept of waste to wealth has added revenue of about 1.2 Crore by collection and disposal of hazardous waste as per the Hazardous waste management rules, 2016.

Under the LIFE awareness program, NMPA performed pond cleaning for two days in the month of May 2023. Whereas in the month of June 2023, 228 sapling plantation was undertaken inside the wharf and port colony. The concept of LiFE, i.e., Lifestyle for Environment was introduced by The Prime Minister at the World Leaders’ Summit in Glasgow at COP26 when he gave a clarion call to rekindle a global pursuit to adopt environment-friendly lifestyles and practices.
