Mumbai: Jio Platforms made a strong debut on the Indian stock market on Wednesday, October 28, with its shares listing at around ₹1,358–₹1,359 apiece on the BSE and NSE, approximately 21.36% above the initial public offering (IPO) price of ₹1,119. The listing placed the telecom and digital services company among India’s most valuable listed businesses, with a market capitalisation of about ₹12.53 lakh crore.
The market debut followed an IPO that attracted substantial interest from institutional and retail investors. The issue, valued at approximately ₹30,213 crore, was subscribed 22.19 times, with bids worth several lakh crore rupees. The listing also marked a major development for Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms’ parent company, as investors gained a separate market valuation for its digital and telecommunications business. Shares open more than 21% above issue price
Jio Platforms’ shares began trading at ₹1,358 on both the BSE and NSE, compared with the IPO issue price of ₹1,119. The difference represented a listing premium of approximately ₹239 per share, or 21.36%.
The listing price was closely watched by investors who had applied for shares during the three-day subscription period from October 21 to October 23. At the upper end of the price band, a standard lot of 12 shares required an investment of ₹13,428. Based on a listing price of ₹1,358, the same lot was valued at ₹16,296, representing a notional gain of ₹2,868 before transaction costs and taxes.
However, listing gains reflect the price at a particular point in time and do not guarantee future returns. The share price may move as investors assess the company’s financial performance, valuation and growth prospects.
₹30,213-crore IPO draws strong investor demand
Jio Platforms’ public issue attracted considerable demand before its stock market debut. The IPO was subscribed 22.19 times overall, while qualified institutional buyers subscribed to their allocated portion 70.55 times, according to reports on the issue. The offering drew bids worth approximately ₹7.3 lakh crore, highlighting strong investor interest in the company.
The issue consisted of a fresh issuance of 27 crore equity shares rather than an offer-for-sale component. A substantial portion of the proceeds is intended to support debt repayment at Reliance Jio Infocomm, the company’s material subsidiary, with the remaining funds earmarked for general corporate purposes.
The strong subscription indicated investor interest in Jio’s established telecommunications operations and its plans to expand into broadband, enterprise technology, cloud computing and artificial intelligence. Nevertheless, high demand for an IPO does not by itself establish whether a stock is attractively valued for long-term investors.
Jio becomes India’s second-most valuable listed company
The listing gave Jio Platforms a market capitalisation of approximately ₹12.53 lakh crore, making it India’s second-most valuable company by market value at the time of the reported rankings. Reliance Industries remained in first place with a market capitalisation of around ₹16 lakh crore. Bharti Airtel, which had occupied the second position before Jio’s debut, moved to third with a market capitalisation of approximately ₹12.18 lakh crore.
The new valuation also strengthened the Reliance group’s position in the corporate market-capitalisation rankings. Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms and Jio Financial Services together had a combined market value of approximately ₹29.90 lakh crore, according to the reported figures.
The market capitalisation represents the market value of a company’s outstanding shares. It is not the same as the amount of cash raised through an IPO, nor does it mean that the entire valuation has been added to the wealth of the company’s promoters.
Reliance Industries already held a substantial stake in Jio Platforms before the listing. Following the IPO, its stake was expected to decline from 66.35% to 64.41%, according to the reported ownership figures. The value of that holding will change with Jio Platforms’ share price, while Reliance Industries’ own market value will continue to be influenced by its wider businesses and market conditions.
Telecom, broadband and digital services underpin growth prospects
Jio Platforms has developed from a business centred on mobile connectivity into a broader digital services ecosystem. Its operations include telecommunications through Reliance Jio Infocomm, home broadband services such as JioFiber and JioAirFiber, and digital offerings for consumers and businesses.
Analysts have pointed to subscriber scale, rising average revenue per user (ARPU), broadband expansion and opportunities in enterprise services and AI as potential drivers of future growth. ARPU is a key telecom-sector measure that tracks the average revenue earned per user over a given period. The company’s ability to increase revenue per customer while managing costs will be important to its future financial performance.
Jio’s digital ambitions also include cloud services, enterprise technology and artificial intelligence. These areas could offer additional revenue opportunities beyond mobile connectivity, although their contribution will depend on adoption, investment requirements and the company’s ability to convert demand into sustainable earnings.
Competition remains an important consideration. Jio operates in a market where rivals are also investing in mobile networks, broadband and digital services. Pricing decisions, capital expenditure, regulatory developments and customer retention could all affect future profitability.
What investors should watch after the listing
The strong debut provides Jio Platforms with a public-market valuation and gives investors a direct way to invest in its telecommunications and digital businesses. However, a premium listing does not remove the risks associated with buying shares at a high valuation.
Investors will need to monitor quarterly earnings, ARPU trends, broadband subscriber growth, cash flow, debt levels and the pace at which newer digital services contribute to revenue. The stock’s subsequent performance will also depend on broader market conditions and whether business results meet investor expectations.
Jio Platforms’ debut is a significant milestone for India’s IPO market and the Reliance group. Its market capitalisation of about ₹12.53 lakh crore places it among the country’s leading listed companies, but sustained value creation will depend on execution, financial performance and investor confidence beyond the first day of trading.
