New Delhi: Meta is expanding WhatsApp’s financial services in India with the rollout of a new bill payment feature that will allow users to pay a wide range of household and financial bills directly through the messaging platform.

The feature will be introduced gradually across India over the coming weeks and will be available on both Android and iOS devices. According to the report, the service will cover 22,722 billers across 30 categories, giving WhatsApp users access to a broad range of recurring payment services without having to switch to another application.

The move marks another step in Meta’s efforts to expand WhatsApp beyond messaging and position the platform as an everyday digital services destination in one of its largest markets.

WhatsApp bill payments to cover 30 categories

The new service will cover several commonly used bill payment categories. These include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments.

The service is being powered by Bharat Connect, India’s interoperable bill payment network. Its integration with WhatsApp is expected to give users access to thousands of billers through a familiar platform.

With 22,722 billers covered across 30 categories, the service could provide users with a single interface for managing several recurring household and financial payments.

Meta is not switching on the service for every Indian user simultaneously. Instead, the rollout will happen in phases over the coming weeks as access is progressively expanded across the country.

How to access bill payments on WhatsApp

Users who receive access to the feature will be able to find bill payment options through the INR icon displayed at the top of WhatsApp’s home screen.

From there, users can access the bill payment service and manage their accounts within WhatsApp.

The platform will also support users who maintain multiple accounts with the same biller. WhatsApp will allow multiple accounts for a single provider to be managed within the service, which could be useful for customers handling more than one electricity, utility or other eligible account.

The payment system will support multiple payment methods. Users will be able to pay bills through UPI, debit cards and credit cards.

This gives customers flexibility in choosing how they settle their monthly or recurring bills.

Meta expands WhatsApp’s financial services

WhatsApp already has a presence in India’s digital payments ecosystem through WhatsApp Pay, which allows users to send and receive money using the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

The addition of bill payments expands the range of financial transactions that users can complete within the application.

Instead of opening a separate bill payment or financial services application, users will increasingly be able to handle everyday transactions from WhatsApp itself.

For Meta, the expansion could increase the amount of time users spend interacting with WhatsApp while also creating opportunities to develop additional financial and utility-related services around the platform.

India remains a key market for WhatsApp

India is one of WhatsApp’s largest markets, making the country particularly important for Meta’s efforts to expand the platform’s capabilities.

The company has increasingly looked beyond WhatsApp’s traditional messaging function by introducing payments and other services designed around everyday digital activity.

Bill payments are particularly relevant because recurring expenses such as electricity, water, gas, insurance and loan payments have become increasingly integrated into India’s digital payment ecosystem.

The new feature could make WhatsApp more useful for consumers who already use the platform regularly and are comfortable making digital transactions.

Bharat Connect powers the service

The bill payment service will operate through Bharat Connect, which enables digital access to billers across different categories.

The integration means users will not be limited to a small selection of service providers. Instead, WhatsApp’s rollout is expected to eventually provide access to 22,722 billers across 30 categories.

The phased launch will allow Meta to progressively make the service available to users throughout India rather than activating it nationwide at once.

The scale of the biller network is significant because the usefulness of any bill payment platform depends heavily on the number of service providers available to customers.

WhatsApp faces competition from digital payment apps

Meta’s move also places WhatsApp in greater competition with India’s established digital payment and financial services platforms.

Apps offering UPI payments and bill payment services already allow users to pay utility bills, recharge FASTags, settle insurance payments and handle other recurring expenses.

WhatsApp’s advantage could come from its enormous existing user base and the convenience of bringing these services directly into a messaging application.

The company will nevertheless need to ensure that users find the bill payment experience reliable, secure and easy to use if it wants the service to become a regular part of their financial routines.

Rollout to happen gradually

The bill payment feature is not expected to become available to all Indian WhatsApp users immediately.

Meta plans to roll it out progressively over the coming weeks, with access expanding across the country. Both Android and iOS users are expected to receive the feature as the rollout progresses.

Users who do not see the INR icon or bill payment option immediately may therefore have to wait until the feature reaches their account.

What the expansion means for users

The introduction of bill payments could make WhatsApp a more comprehensive digital platform for Indian consumers.

With electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card and loan payments among the supported categories, the feature covers several important recurring financial obligations.

Users will be able to access these services without leaving WhatsApp, while multiple payment methods and support for multiple accounts with the same biller add further convenience.

For Meta, the expansion represents a broader push into India’s digital payments ecosystem. WhatsApp has already established a UPI payments presence, and adding bill payments gives the platform another route into consumers’ everyday financial activity.

If the rollout proves successful, WhatsApp could become a more significant player in India’s competitive digital payments and bill payment market.
