As the world ushered in 2025, Indians made a mark on the convenience economy, with fast-delivery platforms like Swiggy Instamart, Blinkit, and BigBasket witnessing a surge in New Year’s Eve orders. From aloo bhujiya to handcuffs, consumers ordered an unexpected mix of items to celebrate the occasion, setting new records for instant delivery.

Blinkit co-founder Albinder Dhindsa shared some intriguing statistics on social media. By 8 PM on December 31, Blinkit had delivered 2.3 lakh packets of aloo bhujiya and 6,834 packets of ice cubes. Condoms were also in high demand, with chocolate flavor topping the list at 39%, followed by strawberry at 31%. In a surprising twist, grape orders surged unexpectedly, catching even Dhindsa by surprise. Social media users explained that the tradition of eating 12 grapes on New Year’s Eve to make wishes—popularized by Sofia Vergara’s character in Modern Family—was behind the trend.

Swiggy Instamart saw a spike in chip orders, peaking at 853 orders per minute at 7:30 PM. BigBasket experienced a 552% rise in sales of non-alcoholic beverages and a 325% increase in disposable cups and plates. The convenience of having everything delivered quickly is a testament to a cultural shift towards instant access.

This trend, accelerated by the pandemic, has transformed shopping habits across India, with quick-commerce platforms now expanding beyond metro cities to reach tier-2 and tier-3 towns, offering nationwide ease.
