Former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has made a strong return to the global technology industry with his artificial intelligence startup, Parallel Web Systems, which has reportedly achieved a valuation of around $2 billion following a fresh funding round. The milestone marks a significant comeback for the IIT Bombay alumnus after his departure from Twitter following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the social media platform.
From Twitter to AI entrepreneur
Agrawal, who previously served as Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer before becoming CEO in 2021, was removed from the top post after Musk acquired the company in 2022. Instead of returning to a corporate role, he launched Parallel Web Systems in 2023, focusing on building infrastructure that enables AI applications and autonomous AI agents to access and process web information more efficiently.
Building the future of AI infrastructure
Unlike startups developing consumer-facing AI chatbots, Parallel Web Systems is creating the underlying technology that powers AI systems. Its platform is designed to help autonomous AI agents perform complex research tasks, analyse large volumes of information and interact with the internet more effectively.
The company has reportedly attracted major enterprise customers and more than 100,000 developers, with its technology being used for applications such as legal research, insurance claims processing, financial analysis and government contract reviews.
Investors back Agrawal’s vision
Parallel Web Systems recently secured $100 million in Series B funding, led by Sequoia Capital, taking its valuation to approximately $2 billion. Existing investors, including Khosla Ventures, Index Ventures and Kleiner Perkins, also participated in the funding round.
The achievement highlights Agrawal’s successful transition from leading one of the world’s biggest social media platforms to building a cutting-edge AI infrastructure company, reinforcing India’s growing influence in the global artificial intelligence ecosystem.
