Bengaluru: Ride-hailing platform Rapido has integrated its zero-commission food delivery service Ownly into its main app in Bengaluru, allowing users to order food alongside booking bike taxis, autos and cabs.
The move marks a significant step in Rapido’s expansion into the food delivery segment, giving Ownly direct access to the company’s large monthly active user base while leveraging its existing rider network for deliveries.
Rapido expands food delivery offering
Users can now access Ownly directly through the Rapido app, while the standalone Ownly application will continue to remain available. To encourage customers to try the service, Rapido is offering 50% discount, up to ₹100, on the first food order.
According to the company, integrating Ownly into its flagship app will help convert millions of mobility users into food delivery customers, noting that India’s ride-hailing market has nearly twice the number of users compared to online food ordering platforms.
Zero-commission model for restaurants
Ownly is positioning itself as a cost-effective alternative to traditional food delivery platforms by adopting a zero-commission business model. Instead of charging restaurants a commission on every order, the platform allows eateries to retain the full order value while paying only a fixed subscription fee to be listed.
Customers also pay the same menu prices without additional platform markups, making the service attractive for both restaurants and consumers.
Commenting on the integration, Aravind Sanka, Co-founder of Rapido, said Ownly was created to address one of the biggest structural challenges in food delivery by improving business economics for restaurants without compromising customer experience.
Competition heats up
Rapido’s entry comes as competition intensifies in India’s online food delivery market, currently dominated by Zomato and Swiggy. Other platforms, including ONDC and Magicpin, have also been attempting to challenge the established players with lower-cost models.
Responding to the growing competition, Eternal Founder and CEO Deepinder Goyal said the impact of platforms such as Ownly and Toing on Zomato’s business has remained limited so far, stating that they have not introduced a significantly different use case for customers.
