Mumbai: Sun Pharmaceutical Industries reported a 36.2% year-on-year decline in consolidated net profit for the September 2026 quarter, with its bottom line affected by a one-time loss of Rs 1,269 crore. The pharmaceutical major’s revenue, however, grew nearly 12% and exceeded market estimates.
The company posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,988.53 crore in the second quarter of FY27, compared with Rs 3,117.95 crore in the corresponding quarter of the previous financial year.
Revenue from operations increased 11.9% to Rs 16,198.71 crore, from Rs 14,478.31 crore a year earlier.
The profit figure was below the estimate of Rs 3,085 crore by NDTV Profit, while revenue exceeded its estimate of Rs 15,766 crore.
At the operational level, earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) rose 4.8% to Rs 4,744 crore, compared with Rs 4,527 crore in the year-ago quarter.
However, the EBITDA margin narrowed to 29.3% from 31.3%, indicating that operating profitability grew at a slower pace than revenue.
One-time loss weighs on quarterly profit
The biggest factor behind Sun Pharma’s sharp decline in net profit was a one-time loss of Rs 1,269 crore during the September quarter.
The exceptional charge significantly affected the company’s reported bottom line, taking net profit down to Rs 1,988.53 crore from Rs 3,117.95 crore a year earlier.
The difference between the company’s revenue growth and profit performance highlights the impact of the one-time item on the quarterly results.
Investors will look at the nature and accounting treatment of the exceptional loss while assessing the company’s underlying earnings performance. The reported figures also need to be considered alongside operating income, expenses and margins to understand the quarter’s overall performance.
Although revenue increased by nearly 12%, the fall in net profit meant that the company did not translate its higher sales into a corresponding increase in reported earnings.
Revenue beats market estimates
Sun Pharma’s consolidated revenue from operations rose to Rs 16,198.71 crore in Q2 FY27, marking an 11.9% increase over the Rs 14,478.31 crore reported in the same period last year.
The revenue figure was higher than the Rs 15,766 crore estimate cited by NDTV Profit.
The growth indicates that the company maintained an expansion in its overall business during the quarter, even as its net profit came under pressure.
Revenue performance is an important indicator for pharmaceutical companies because it reflects sales across their business segments and markets. However, the impact of product mix, operating costs and exceptional items also determines how much of that growth reaches the bottom line.
For Sun Pharma, the September-quarter results therefore present a contrast between stronger sales and lower reported profitability.
EBITDA increases, but margins narrow
Sun Pharma’s EBITDA increased 4.8% year-on-year to Rs 4,744 crore during the quarter.
In comparison, the company had reported EBITDA of Rs 4,527 crore in the September quarter of the previous financial year.
Despite the increase in absolute EBITDA, the margin declined by two percentage points, from 31.3% to 29.3%.
EBITDA measures earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation. It is commonly used to assess a company’s operating performance before financing costs, tax expenses and certain non-cash charges.
The narrower margin suggests that operating earnings did not grow as quickly as revenue during the quarter. This is an important factor for investors evaluating whether the company’s sales growth is translating into improved operating efficiency.
The margin movement also provides a separate perspective from the reported net profit decline, which was affected by the one-time loss.
Sun Pharma Q2 FY27: Key financial figures
| Financial metric | Q2 FY27 | Year-ago quarter | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consolidated net profit | Rs 1,988.53 crore | Rs 3,117.95 crore | Down 36.2% |
| Revenue from operations | Rs 16,198.71 crore | Rs 14,478.31 crore | Up 11.9% |
| EBITDA | Rs 4,744 crore | Rs 4,527 crore | Up 4.8% |
| EBITDA margin | 29.3% | 31.3% | Down 2 percentage points |
| One-time loss | Rs 1,269 crore | — | — |
The figures show that revenue and EBITDA increased, but the company recorded a substantial decline in net profit. The exceptional loss and reduction in EBITDA margin are key factors to consider when interpreting the results.
What the results mean for investors
Sun Pharma’s Q2 FY27 performance offers a mixed picture. Revenue growth exceeded the cited analyst estimate, while EBITDA also increased from the year-ago period.
However, the 36.2% decline in net profit and the narrowing of the EBITDA margin are likely to remain important considerations for investors.
The one-time loss of Rs 1,269 crore had a significant impact on reported earnings. Investors assessing the company’s performance will therefore need to distinguish between the effect of this exceptional item and the operating trends reflected in revenue, EBITDA and margins.
The company’s ability to sustain revenue growth while protecting operating margins will remain important in subsequent quarters.
For now, Sun Pharma’s September-quarter results show that the business continued to expand its revenue base, but higher sales did not translate into stronger reported profit. The next set of results will provide further insight into whether margins stabilise and how the company performs after accounting for the exceptional charge.
