Bengaluru: Tata Electronics and L&T Semiconductor Technologies Limited (LTSCT) have announced a strategic partnership aimed at expanding indigenous semiconductor manufacturing in India for both domestic and global customers.
The collaboration will bring together LTSCT’s expertise in fabless semiconductor design and engineering with Tata Electronics’ capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and testing.
Under the partnership, the companies will explore opportunities to fabricate and package LTSCT’s existing and future semiconductor products using Tata Electronics’ range of fabrication technologies and packaging solutions.
The initiative is expected to cover chip products for several sectors, including automotive, industrial, communications, security and intelligent-edge applications.
Partnership connects chip design with manufacturing
LTSCT operates as a fabless semiconductor company, focusing on chip design and engineering rather than owning its own semiconductor fabrication facilities. Tata Electronics, meanwhile, is developing capabilities across semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and testing.
The partnership is intended to bring these complementary capabilities together. The companies will jointly examine opportunities to manufacture and package LTSCT’s current portfolio as well as future chip products.
The collaboration will also focus on optimising chip designs for manufacturing. This is important because semiconductor designs need to be developed with manufacturing processes and packaging requirements in mind if they are to be produced efficiently at scale.
By working together during the design-to-manufacturing process, the companies aim to support the transition of semiconductor products from design concepts to industrial-scale production.
Focus on automotive, industrial and communication chips
The partnership will cover semiconductor applications across a range of industries.
The companies said the collaboration will focus on products for the automotive, industrial, communications, security and intelligent-edge segments.
These sectors increasingly depend on semiconductors for functions ranging from vehicle electronics and industrial automation to connected devices, communications equipment, security systems and edge computing.
The companies will explore fabrication and packaging opportunities based on the requirements of LTSCT’s existing and upcoming product portfolio.
The arrangement is also expected to support the development of manufacturing processes that can deliver products at scale while meeting quality and reliability requirements for different end-use industries.
LTSCT sees opportunity to move up the value chain
LTSCT Chief Executive Dr Sandeep Kumar said semiconductor leadership would increasingly depend not only on developing chip designs but also on the ability to manufacture and package those designs efficiently.
“Semiconductor leadership will increasingly be defined not just by design breakthroughs but by the ability to industrialise those designs through advanced packaging and manufacturing. At LTSCT, we see this as India’s opportunity to move up the value chain,” Kumar said.
He described the engagement with Tata Electronics as an important step towards developing these capabilities in India.
According to Kumar, the partnership will support the development of semiconductor products that can be designed in India and supplied to global markets with an emphasis on speed, reliability and scale.
Tata Electronics to contribute manufacturing capabilities
Tata Electronics said the partnership would strengthen India’s semiconductor capabilities across multiple stages of the value chain.
Dr Randhir Thakur, CEO and MD of Tata Electronics, said the company’s manufacturing, packaging and testing capabilities would complement LTSCT’s semiconductor design and engineering expertise.
“Our partnership with LTSCT is a significant step which will accelerate India’s vision of becoming a full-stack semiconductor nation, by combining L&T Semiconductor’s deep fabless design and engineering expertise with our capabilities across semiconductor manufacturing, packaging and testing,” Thakur said.
The companies will therefore work across different stages of semiconductor development, from design optimisation and fabrication to packaging and testing.
Advanced packaging is a key part of the collaboration
