Mumbai: Natarajan Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, on Monday described the allegations of harassment at Tata Consultancy Services’ Nashik office as “gravely concerning and anguishing”, announcing a high-level investigation into the matter.
The statement comes amid serious complaints by eight women employees, who have alleged sexual harassment and forced religious conversion at the company’s Nashik branch in Maharashtra.
Probe led by senior leadership
Chandrasekaran said that a thorough investigation has been initiated under the leadership of TCS Chief Operating Officer Arathi Subramanian. The objective, he added, is to establish the facts and identify those responsible.
“This incident is being treated with utmost seriousness. Action has already been initiated against the accused employees, and the company is extending full cooperation to the ongoing investigations,” he said in an official statement.
Zero-tolerance policy reiterated
Reiterating the group’s stance, the Tata Sons Chairman emphasised that the organisation maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy towards any form of harassment, coercion, or misconduct.
He assured that stringent action would be taken against those found guilty, and necessary corrective measures would be implemented to prevent such incidents in the future.
The Tata Group, often referred to as a “salt-to-software” conglomerate, has long positioned itself on strong corporate governance and employee welfare standards.
Police action and SIT probe
The case has also drawn the attention of law enforcement authorities. Police have constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the allegations after complaints were formally lodged by the affected employees.
According to officials, the complainants have accused certain senior colleagues of mental and sexual harassment, while also alleging that the human resources department failed to act on their grievances.
So far, seven individuals, including a female HR manager, have been arrested in connection with the case.
Company response and internal action
In its initial response, TCS confirmed that it had taken swift action upon becoming aware of the issue. The company stated that employees linked to the allegations have been suspended pending investigation.
“TCS has a long-standing zero-tolerance policy towards harassment and coercion of any form. We have always ensured the highest standards of safety and well-being of our employees at the workplace,” the company said.
Conclusion
As investigations continue, the case has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and internal grievance redressal mechanisms in large organisations. The outcome of both the internal probe and the police investigation will be closely watched, with expectations of accountability and systemic reforms if lapses are found.
