Indian-American tech leader Neal Mohan, the CEO of YouTube, has been named TIME magazine’s 2025 CEO of the Year, a title bestowed on him for shaping what the publication calls the “cultural diet of billions.” Mohan, who completed his high school education in Lucknow, was described as a “surprisingly mellow” leader steering one of the world’s most influential platforms.

TIME hails Mohan as a shaper of global culture

In a profile released on Monday (US time), TIME likened YouTube to a global ecosystem of content where Mohan plays the role of a cultivator.

“In many ways, YouTube is creating the cultural diet that the globe is beginning to subsist on. Mohan is the farmer; what he cultivates will be what we eat,” the magazine wrote.

TIME noted that YouTube — which turned 20 this year — now influences everything from entertainment and politics to education and lifestyle trends. Under Mohan’s leadership, it said, the platform has only amplified its reach and relevance.

A mellow CEO leading a powerful platform

Despite being in charge of what TIME calls “the world’s most powerful distraction machine,” Mohan is portrayed as low-key and thoughtful.

The profile describes him as “quiet-spoken, deliberative, hard to ruffle”. He enjoys simple pleasures: watching sports, attending his daughters’ dance recitals, and wearing open-collar white shirts. TIME even notes that his favourite candy is the modest Butterfinger.

While Mohan often appears in YouTube creators’ videos upon request, the magazine jokes that he is “neither great nor horrible” on camera — but always willing.

YouTube’s dramatic growth under Mohan

Mohan became CEO in 2023, succeeding longtime leader Susan Wojcicki. Since then, YouTube has expanded its dominance in both long-form and short-form content.

Key milestones highlighted by TIME include:

  • YouTube TV cementing itself as a top cable replacement service.
  • Half of YouTube’s global viewership now occurring on TV screens.
  • YouTube Shorts attracting 2 billion logged-in monthly users, rivaling Meta’s Reels.

The magazine says YouTube has become “both a brand and a universe”, increasingly central to the world’s media consumption.

Mohan’s Indian roots and early education

Born in Lafayette, Indiana, Mohan moved to Lucknow at the age of 12 when his father, a civil engineer, returned to the US to pursue a PhD. Mohan attended high school in the city, where he studied Hindi and Sanskrit, later describing the experience as transformative.

“I had to learn nine years’ worth of Hindi and Sanskrit,” Mohan told USA Today. “It’s really not just about surviving, it’s about thriving through those pivotal moments.”

He went on to earn his undergraduate degree and MBA from Stanford University before rising through the ranks at Google and YouTube.

A career built on innovation and trust

Before becoming CEO, Mohan served as YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, overseeing user experience, trust and safety, and product development across devices. Earlier, he led Google’s Display and Video Ads division as Senior Vice President.

His leadership style, TIME suggests, reflects a blend of technical expertise, calm stewardship, and a deep understanding of how billions interact with digital content every day.
