In a swift anti-corruption action, Lokayukta officials in Chikkamagaluru apprehended Kantharaj, a second division assistant in the district social welfare department, while accepting a bribe of ₹10,000. The bribe was demanded for sanctioning the release of a ₹1 lakh loan under the direct loan scheme.
Sridhar, a resident of Nellimakki village in Mudigere taluk, had applied for the loan through the Parishishta Jathi Alemari Mathu Arealemari Abhivridhi Nigama, a government body aimed at supporting marginalized communities. While the loan was sanctioned, Kantharaj allegedly demanded ₹10,000 to release the funds. Frustrated by the demand, Sridhar lodged a complaint with the Lokayukta.
Acting on the complaint, Lokayukta officials organized a raid and caught Kantharaj red-handed while accepting the bribe. The operation highlights the ongoing efforts by the Lokayukta to crack down on corruption within government departments.
This incident serves as a reminder of the corruption that continues to plague some areas of public service, despite various mechanisms in place to ensure transparency. The Lokayukta has been actively pursuing similar cases, ensuring that those who misuse their official positions for personal gain are held accountable.
