The Chikkamagaluru Public Works Department, responsible for the state highways and major district roads, is on high alert as continuous rainfall is expected throughout July. The Deputy Commissioner (DC) has reported that excessive rainfall is increasing the risk of hills, roads, culverts, bridges, and drains collapsing due to the heavy moisture. This situation is further exacerbated by the movement of heavy lorries. The DC assured that the administration is taking necessary measures to ensure the smooth movement of public transportation and to prevent accidents.
The Commissioner specifically cautioned about the potential for landslides triggered by heavy vehicle movement during these rains. High-risk areas include Sri Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swamy Dargah, Seethalayyanagiri, Mullayyanagiri, Manikyadhara, and Galikere. Surrounding hill stations are also experiencing heavy rains and high winds, increasing the danger. The DC emphasized that heavy vehicle movement in these conditions could lead to severe damage and loss of lives.
In a related measure, Shivamogga Deputy Commissioner Gurudatta Hegade has issued a vehicular traffic ban on heavy goods vehicles on Agumbe Ghat, along Thirthahalli-Malpe Road (NH 169A), from June 27 to September 15. This ban, issued under section 115 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and Section 221(a)(2) of the Karnataka Motor Vehicles Act, 1989, is aimed at preventing landslides. Only light vehicles are permitted on this stretch, with heavy vehicles being redirected via alternative routes.
