In 2024, criminal activities in Chikkamagaluru saw a noticeable decline compared to the previous year. While 6,241 cases were registered in 2023, 5,904 cases were reported in 2024, reflecting a significant drop. This reduction can be attributed to the proactive measures taken by the district police.

Among the reported cases, 121 were related to the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) Act, and 227 were drug-related incidents. The police managed to arrest 254 individuals involved in drug cases. Superintendent of Police Vikram Amate praised his team’s efforts and credited the reduction in crime to the bold actions of officers and staff.

Murder cases also saw a decrease, with 28 reported in 2024, down from 31 in 2023. The causes behind these murders were primarily linked to illicit relationships, family disputes, property issues, domestic quarrels, mental instability, and old enmities. Road accidents also dropped, from 1,010 cases in 2023 to 950 in 2024. Fatal accidents decreased from 257 in 2023 to 222 in 2024, with a reduction in both deaths and injuries.

Theft cases were lower in 2024, with 22 reported compared to 30 in 2023. Night thefts saw a notable decrease as well, with 74 cases in 2024, down from 97 the previous year. While the value of stolen goods decreased from Rs 6 crore in 2023 to Rs 4.2 crore in 2024, the recovery rate improved significantly, with Rs 2.5 crore worth of stolen items returned.

Cybercrimes, however, rose sharply. In 2023, the value of cyber fraud stood at Rs 1.3 crore, but it surged to Rs 5.38 crore in 2024. The police have urged victims to immediately contact the toll-free number 1930 and report cybercrimes to local stations to prevent further financial losses.
