Chikkamagaluru: Growing up in the small town of Aldur near Chikkamagaluru, Awais Ahmed spent his childhood immersed in science books that sparked a fascination with space. Today, at the age of 28, he is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Bengaluru-based Pixxel Space Technologies, one of India’s leading private space start-ups and the first Indian space company to secure a contract from NASA to provide hyperspectral Earth-observation data.
Childhood curiosity shaped a dream
Awais Ahmed credits his passion for space to the encouragement of his parents and the books his father regularly bought for him.
His father, Nadeem Ahmed, who runs a pharmacy in Aldur, frequently took him to libraries and bookshops, where he purchased children’s science encyclopaedias covering topics such as the solar system, nebulae, planets and black holes.
His mother, Ghazala Tashfeen, and father encouraged him to pursue his interests, nurturing the curiosity that would later define his career.
Education laid the foundation
Awais completed his primary education at Akshara Public School in Aldur before studying at Purna Prajna School in Sangameshwar Pete.
He later moved to Mangaluru for his pre-university education and subsequently joined BITS Pilani in Rajasthan, where he pursued a dual degree in mathematics and manufacturing engineering.
During his time at BITS Pilani, he participated in a student satellite programme in collaboration with scientists from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). The experience provided practical exposure to satellite design and strengthened his interest in space technology.
SpaceX visit became a turning point
A defining moment in Awais Ahmed’s journey came in 2017, when he served as the engineering lead of Hyperloop India.
His team developed a prototype pod for the annual SpaceX Hyperloop Competition, earning a place among the top 20 finalists invited to Los Angeles.
The visit allowed him to meet Elon Musk, tour SpaceX’s rocket manufacturing and testing facilities, and witness the scale of innovation within the private space industry.
According to Ahmed, the experience convinced him that space technology would become his lifelong career.
Building Pixxel Space Technologies
Months before completing his engineering degree in 2019, Awais founded Pixxel Space Technologies.
The Bengaluru-based company focuses on hyperspectral Earth observation, using satellites capable of capturing detailed data beyond what conventional satellite imagery can provide.
The company has launched nine hyperspectral satellites, including six during 2025.
These satellites collect data that can help monitor soil quality, crop diseases, environmental changes, mineral resources and energy infrastructure, supporting better decision-making across multiple sectors.
Support from investors and policy reforms
Awais said the growth of India’s private space sector and government policy reforms played a significant role in the company’s progress.
According to him, Pixxel has raised nearly ₹960 crore from investors.
He also acknowledged that the opening of India’s space sector to private companies, along with access to testing facilities and a supportive regulatory framework, helped accelerate the company’s growth.
Today, Pixxel employs around 275 people, with approximately 240 employees based in India, while the remaining team members work from the United States and Europe.
Parents’ sacrifices behind the success
Recalling his son’s journey, Nadeem Ahmed said the family made several sacrifices to support his education.
He regularly purchased science books for Awais and moved with him during different stages of his schooling to ensure he received quality education.
The family also took an education loan and pledged gold to finance his studies at BITS Pilani.
Nadeem recalled that Awais often studied late into the night and woke up early every morning, demonstrating remarkable dedication throughout his academic years.
The family purchased a house in Aldur in October 2025, shortly before Awais got married. He is now married to a doctor.
Inspiring India’s next generation
Awais Ahmed’s journey from a small town in Karnataka to leading one of India’s most promising private space companies reflects the growing opportunities within the country’s space ecosystem.
With Pixxel’s innovations in hyperspectral imaging and international collaborations, he hopes to position India as a global leader in space technology while developing solutions that address challenges in agriculture, environmental conservation and resource management.
His story stands as an example of how curiosity, perseverance and family support can transform childhood dreams into achievements with global impact.
