Chikkamagaluru district is experiencing a resurgence of hope and relief as its rivers, the lifeline of the region, swell with abundant monsoon showers. After a year of drought that left rivers dry and water sources depleted, the current monsoon has brought much-needed replenishment.
Last year, the malnad region of the district suffered severely from drought, recording the lowest rainfall in a decade. However, this year has seen a turnaround, with blessings from the rain gods bringing joy to the residents.
Since January, the district has received approximately 60 cm of rainfall, matching the average expected by the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre (KSNDMC). While Kalasa taluk has received 14% less rainfall than usual, other taluks, including Chikkamagaluru taluk and Ajjampura, have surpassed conventional rainfall levels. Chikkamagaluru taluk alone has received an impressive 60% more rainfall than average, while Ajjampura in the plain region has recorded a 56% surplus.
The district’s rivers—Tunga, Bhadra, Hemavathi, Nethravathi, and Vedavathi—along with numerous streams and rivulets, originate here. Their rejuvenation is crucial not only for local agriculture and livelihoods but also for supplying water to half of Karnataka throughout the year.
With expectations of continued good rains in July, residents are optimistic about sustained agricultural productivity and water security in the region.
