A village in Chitradurga taluk has been shaken after police arrested a man accused of sexually assaulting his daughters, aged 11 and 14, over the past month. The FIR was registered at the Women Police Station, following a formal complaint by Nirmal Chikkannavar, Child Development Planning Officer with the Department of Women and Child Development.

According to officials, the man allegedly assaulted the younger child in a cornfield, and the elder child inside the house while the mother was present nearby. The matter surfaced after the children confided in their friends, who then informed adults capable of intervening.

Deputy Director Vijay Kumar confirmed that the department acted immediately. “Child protection officers presented the children before the Child Welfare Committee. The children first shared their experiences with their friends. The mother, despite being aware of the situation, did not report it, and she is being questioned,” he said.

Mother detained for questioning

Police stated that the mother has been detained for questioning regarding her alleged failure to report the abuse. Investigators will determine whether there was any neglect or active concealment.

Authorities emphasised that the safety and wellbeing of the children remain the top priority. Both have been placed under the protection of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and are now receiving counselling and trauma-informed care.

Case registered under POCSO

An FIR has been filed under relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Officials have initiated procedures to record the children’s statements in a child-friendly manner, in accordance with the Act.

Counselling sessions have begun, and arrangements are being made to ensure continuity of education and psychological support throughout the legal process.

Villagers demand accountability

As news spread, residents gathered at the office of the Superintendent of Police, Chitradurga, demanding firm action against the accused. Many expressed shock and urged authorities to ensure the children’s long-term safety.

SP Ranjit Kumar Bandaru confirmed the arrest and assured the community that the investigation is progressing. “The man has been arrested and an inquiry is under way. Measures are in place to ensure the safety of the children during the legal proceedings,” he said.

Police have strengthened monitoring around the CWC facility and the children’s temporary accommodation to prevent any external interference.

Officials stress importance of timely reporting

Child protection officers highlighted the significance of early disclosure in safeguarding vulnerable children. This case came to light because the minors trusted their friends, who then informed adults capable of taking action.

Authorities reiterated the need for community awareness and supportive environments where children feel safe to speak up.
