Karnataka’s first scientifically designed reservoir, Vani Vilas Sagara (VVS), built across the Vedavathi river near Hiriyur in Chitradurga district, is gearing up to become a major hub for adventure and eco-tourism. Located about 180 km from Bengaluru, the reservoir’s vast backwaters will officially host boating, kayaking, jet skiing, banana rides, windsurfing, and sailing from November 1, giving a significant boost to tourism in central Karnataka.
Tourism Minister HK Patil confirmed that necessary approvals have now been assured by Deputy CM and Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar, enabling the launch. The project addresses a long-pending demand from drought-hit Chitradurga while also promoting eco-tourism in the adjoining Uttaregudda Wildlife Sanctuary, a 189.5 sq km protected forest declared in December 2022.
The Visvesvaraya Jala Nigam Limited (VJNL), which manages the 1907 reservoir constructed by the Mysore rulers, has already cleared the use of its 8,763-hectare backwaters for tourism activities.
Highlighting the potential, MLC DT Srinivas said the site, just a three-hour drive from Bengaluru via NH-48, would strengthen the local economy and create new livelihood opportunities. He described the combination of the reservoir and the sanctuary as an ideal weekend retreat for city residents.
The tourism department has also earmarked land near the site for a KSTDC-run Mayura Hotel to accommodate visitors. With the Vedavathi river flowing through Uttaregudda and its scenic landscapes during monsoon and winter, officials expect Hiriyur to emerge as one of Karnataka’s premier destinations for adventure and nature tourism.
