Chitradurga: A 21-year-old woman was allegedly raped and murdered just three days after marrying the man she loved in Nayakanahatti, Chitradurga district. The incident has shocked the local community.
Sumalatha, a resident of Karipalayyana Hatti in Chikka Ullarthi village, had married shepherd Gajendra at a temple in Nayakanahatti on August 14. According to the report, Gajendra’s friends Boreyya and Ashok had helped with the wedding.
Woman allegedly attacked after stepping away
After the marriage, Sumalatha stayed with Gajendra at his sheep pen. She reportedly served food to Gajendra and his friends before stepping away to relieve herself.
According to sources cited in the report, Boreyya allegedly followed her, gagged her with a cloth and raped her. He then reportedly called his brother Karayya, who was grazing sheep nearby.
The two men allegedly strangled Sumalatha with a towel before dumping her body into an abandoned well.
Body recovered on August 16
Sumalatha’s body was recovered from the abandoned well on August 16, two days after her marriage.
Chitradurga Superintendent of Police Ranjit Kumar Bandaru said Boreyya and Karayya had been arrested and remanded to judicial custody.
Gajendra and Ashok have also been taken into custody for questioning as police continue their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death.
Investigation underway
Police are investigating the roles of all those taken into custody and are seeking to establish the sequence of events that led to Sumalatha’s death.
