In a landmark decision, the Assam government has opted to withdraw all Foreigners Tribunal cases filed against indigenous members of the Koch-Rajbongshi community. This bold move, announced after a cabinet meeting on April 4, could directly benefit nearly 28,000 people, many of whom have faced lengthy legal battles to prove their citizenship.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that several individuals belonging to this community have been unfairly marked as “D voters” (doubtful voters) in electoral rolls. The government will now also consider removing these tags, restoring full citizenship rights and dignity to the affected.
This move signals a significant shift in the state’s handling of identity and citizenship issues for indigenous communities long caught in procedural limbo.
Other Key Announcements:
-
Dearness Allowance Boost: The cabinet approved a 2% DA hike for government employees and pensioners. Arrears for April and May will be cleared soon.
Flood Control Initiative: A new embankment monitoring force will be set up, involving local youth volunteers. Each group will patrol 8–12 km of embankments during the flood season (April–October). Volunteers will be equipped with essential gear and awarded certificates upon successful completion.
These decisions reflect the Assam government’s focus on administrative sensitivity, social justice, and disaster preparedness.
