Mangaluru: Capuchin friar Fr Rupert Barboza OFM Cap, a familiar name in the religious, cultural and Konkani circles of Mangaluru, passed away at the age of 83 on Thursday, September 24.

According to an official notice from the Capuchin Karnataka Province, Fr Barboza died at 3.30 pm at Father Muller’s Hospital in Mangaluru. He was born on November 24, 1942. Funeral details are expected to be announced separately.

Remembered for his service to Konkani culture

Fr Barboza was associated with St Anne’s Friary in Mangaluru and was involved in the Capuchin community’s pastoral and cultural activities. The Capuchins of St Anne’s have long been involved in preaching, spiritual ministry, the apostolate of the press and socio-cultural activities through the Konkani Natak Sabha.

One of Fr Barboza’s notable contributions was his association with Sevak, the Konkani monthly publication of the Capuchins. He took over as its editor in 1996 and introduced changes to the publication, including computerising its subscriber records and giving the magazine a stronger news-oriented character.

His contribution to Konkani cultural life also extended to the Konkani Natak Sabha. At its platinum jubilee celebrations in 2018, Fr Barboza was among the former presidents honoured for their association with the organisation.

A presence in the Capuchin community

Fr Barboza remained associated with the Capuchin fraternity at St Anne’s Friary and was recorded among its members in the community’s official listings. He also participated in religious and cultural programmes organised by the friars.

In 2022, he was among the Capuchin friars who attended the Divine Mercy feast celebration at the Divine Mercy Retreat Centre in Bejai.

He was also present at Capuchin cultural programmes, including the 2018 presentation of Bethlehemachi Saanz, which brought together religious, cultural and artistic communities in Mangaluru.

The passing of Fr Rupert Barboza marks the loss of a Capuchin friar who contributed to the religious and cultural life of Mangaluru, particularly through his association with Konkani journalism and community activities.

May his soul rest in peace.
