Mangaluru: For the first time in the history of the Diocese of Mangalore, the St Anthony Devotion Trust, Jeppu, is organising ‘Ga Thu Jibe’ (Sing, O Tongue), a diocesan-level Konkani group singing competition dedicated exclusively to hymns in honour of St Anthony of Padua. The historic choral competition will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2026, at St Anthony Ashram, Jeppu.

The event is being organised as a spiritual prelude to the annual Feast of the Relic of St Anthony, traditionally celebrated in February. It aims to revive age-old Konkani devotional hymns while also encouraging the creation of new musical compositions praising the ‘Wonder Worker’ of Padua.

Celebration of sacred Konkani music

Choirs and singing groups from parishes, religious houses, and educational institutions across the Diocese of Mangalore will gather at Jeppu for this unique competition. Participants will present a blend of traditional devotional hymns and original compositions, offering audiences an enriching evening of sacred Konkani choral music.

Organisers noted that the competition seeks not only musical excellence but also spiritual depth, with emphasis on harmony, devotion, and lyrical richness rooted in Konkani faith traditions.

Bishop to preside over valedictory ceremony

The competition will begin at 3.15 pm, while the valedictory and prize distribution ceremony is scheduled for 6.45 pm.
Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, Bishop of Mangalore, will preside over the concluding ceremony and distribute prizes to the winning teams.

Attractive prizes announced

To encourage wide participation and recognise excellence, the organisers have announced the following cash prizes along with trophies:

  • First Prize: ₹25,000
  • Second Prize: ₹20,000
  • Third Prize: ₹15,000
  • Ten consolation prizes will also be awarded
