Mangaluru: The Konkani Lekhak Sangh, Karnataka, has announced that eminent writer Patrick Camille Moras, popularly known by his pen name M. Patrik, has been selected for the Konkani Literary Award 2026, in recognition of his lifelong and outstanding contribution to Konkani language and literature.

The Konkani Lekhak Sangh is a voluntary literary organisation founded in 2018 with the sole objective of promoting the Konkani language and nurturing its rich literary traditions. Since 2022, the Sangh has instituted an annual literary award to honour writers whose work has significantly enriched Konkani literature and inspired generations of readers and writers alike.

Award details and felicitation ceremony

For the year 2026, the award committee unanimously chose M. Patrik for his decades-long service to Konkani writing and publishing. The award comprises a cash prize of ₹25,000, a citation, and a commemorative memento.

The formal award ceremony will be held on February 7, 2026, at 6.30 p.m. at the Sandesha Premises, Sandesha Foundation, Bajjodi, Mangaluru. The event is expected to be attended by writers, academicians, cultural enthusiasts, and well-wishers of Konkani literature from across the region.

A journey shaped by resilience and dedication

Born on November 17, 1945, Patrick Camille Moras emerged from a childhood marked by hardship to become one of the most prolific voices in Konkani literature. Compelled to discontinue formal schooling after the fifth standard in order to support his family, his literary journey took a decisive turn when he met J. B. Rasquinha, who became his mentor. Rasquinha introduced him to books, nurtured his reading habit, and encouraged him to sell literature door to door—an experience that deepened his bond with the written word.

At the age of 18, M. Patrik began his career as a book seller and Associate Editor of Kannik Konkani Magazine. What followed was an extraordinary literary output that few can match.

Prolific contribution to Konkani literature

Over the decades, M. Patrik has authored more than 800 short stories, over 400 articles, and 10 novels, addressing themes rooted in social realities, moral dilemmas, and everyday life. Through his publishing house, Nityadar Prakashan, he has also brought out numerous works including plays and detective dramas, providing a vital platform for Konkani creative expression.

His work has played a crucial role in strengthening literary reading culture in Konkani and ensuring that the language remains vibrant and accessible. Today, Konkani—recognised as one of the scheduled languages of India—continues to thrive through such sustained literary efforts, as documented in its historical evolution on Wikipedia’s Konkani language page.

Previous recognitions and honours

In acknowledgement of his immense contribution, M. Patrik has previously received the Honorary Award from the Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and the Sandesha Konkani Literature Award 2026. The Konkani Lekhak Sangh Literary Award further consolidates his position as a stalwart of Konkani writing.

Coverage of Konkani literary developments and cultural initiatives continues to receive attention on platforms such as Newskarnataka and its culture section, which regularly highlight achievements of regional language writers and institutions.

The announcement of the award was made during a press meet attended by senior members of the Sangh and advisory committee:

A legacy that inspires future generations

As the Konkani Lekhak Sangh prepares to honour him in Mangaluru, the literary community views this recognition not merely as a personal accolade, but as a celebration of Konkani literature itself and its enduring cultural relevance.
