Mangaluru: The Diocese of Mangalore observed Good Friday with profound solemnity on April 3, 2026, as thousands of faithful gathered across churches in the coastal district to commemorate the Passion and Death of Jesus Christ.

The day was marked by prayer, fasting, and reflection, with large participation from both urban and rural parishes.

Bishop leads main liturgy at Panja

The main Good Friday liturgical service was presided over by Bishop of Mangalore, Most Rev. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, at St Rita Church, Panja, in the Puttur Deanery.

The solemn service, held at 3:00 pm—the hour of Christ’s death—included the Prostration, Reading of the Passion according to the Gospel of St John, General Intercessions, Adoration of the Holy Cross, and the Rite of Holy Communion.

Cross described as a beacon of hope

In his reflection on the theme “The Cross: A Sign of God’s Love and Hope,” Bishop Saldanha emphasised the spiritual significance of Christ’s sacrifice.

He stated that the Cross is not a symbol of defeat but a beacon of hope, reminding the faithful of God’s mercy and presence even in times of suffering. He encouraged believers to remain steadfast in faith during trials, drawing strength from Christ’s example of surrender and love.

‘Year of Children’ highlights morning devotions

Earlier in the day, the Way of the Cross was conducted across all 125 parishes of the Diocese.

As part of the ongoing ‘Year of Children,’ several parishes organised special Children’s Way of the Cross, where young participants led prayers and reflections. This initiative aimed to involve children actively in the spiritual life of the Church.

At Rosario Cathedral, the traditional panegyric of the Crucifixion was delivered from the historic pulpit, followed by the symbolic ‘unnailing’ and procession of the Body of Christ.

Large participation across parishes

Parishes across the region, including Milagres, Derebail, and Neermarga, witnessed large gatherings of faithful participating in outdoor Way of the Cross processions.

The devotions reflected on the fourteen stations of the Cross, allowing the faithful to meditate on the suffering and sacrifice of Christ.

Day of fasting and reflection

Good Friday was observed with strict fasting and silence, as the faithful entered the final phase of preparation for the Easter Vigil.

The liturgical ceremonies were coordinated by parish priests and religious leaders, ensuring a dignified and prayerful atmosphere throughout the Diocese.

Conclusion

The Good Friday observance across the Diocese of Mangalore stood as a powerful expression of faith, unity, and reflection. With a special focus on children and community participation, the day reinforced the enduring message of sacrifice, hope, and redemption.
