Mangaluru: The Souharda (Friendly) Christmas Festival, organised under the joint auspices of the Saint Mother Teresa Vichara Vedike and the Catholic Sabha Mangalore Pradesh (R), was inaugurated at Kadri Park on Saturday evening, spreading a message of harmony, peace and festive goodwill in the heart of the city.
Celebration of harmony and Christmas spirit
The festival was inaugurated by national youth sportsperson and student Yuvraj Kunder, who formally opened the programme by cutting the Christmas cake. The event drew citizens from across communities, reflecting the inclusive spirit associated with Christmas celebrations in coastal Karnataka.
Delivering the Christmas message, Fr Sudeep, Director of the Sandesha Foundation, highlighted the deeper meaning of the festival and urged people to live the values of compassion, service and unity in their daily lives.
Call for peace and coexistence
The keynote address was delivered by Dr Charles Furtado, Professor at St Aloysius College, who spoke on the relevance of Christmas values in contemporary society. Social activist Muneer Katipalla emphasised the urgent need for social harmony and appealed to citizens to follow the ideals of Jesus Christ to establish peace and mutual respect.
Addressing the gathering, Bank Employees’ Association leader and artist Shyam Sundar underlined the importance of love, coexistence and understanding in building a beautiful and just world.
Felicitations and cultural competitions
As part of the programme, nationally renowned figure skater Yuvraj Kunder was felicitated in recognition of his achievements. Donor Michael D’Souza was also honoured for his contribution and support.
Prizes were distributed to the winners of the Christmas games competition, with St Agnes College securing first place, St Aloysius College winning second place and Sita Bhat Balaga bagging the third prize.
Dignitaries present
The event was presided over by Roy Castelino, President of the forum. Catholic Sabha President Santosh D’Souza, Ecotourism Corporation President Shalet Pinto, entrepreneur Santosh Sequeira, Dolphy D’Souza and Wilma Monteiro were among those present on the occasion.
Forum Secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal welcomed the gathering. The programme was compered by John Rohan, while festival coordinator Stany Lobo proposed the vote of thanks.
