Sharjah, UAE: Thumbay Group on May 13, 2026, broke ground on the Thumbay Psychiatric and Rehabilitation Hospital at Sharjah Healthcare City, marking a major milestone in mental healthcare infrastructure in the region.
The 110,000 sq ft facility with 120 beds is set to become the region’s first private, fully integrated hospital dedicated to psychiatric care, neuro-rehabilitation, and addiction recovery.
Groundbreaking ceremony held in Sharjah
The groundbreaking ceremony was led by H.E. Dr. Abdelaziz Saeed Al Mheiri, Sharjah Executive Council Member and Chairman of the Sharjah Health Authority and Sharjah Healthcare City, in the presence of Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group.
The project is being developed at Sharjah Healthcare City to address the growing demand for specialised mental health and rehabilitation services across the UAE and the Gulf region.
Addressing an underserved healthcare need
Hospital authorities noted that mental health and rehabilitation services remain among the most underserved sectors in regional healthcare.
The upcoming hospital aims to provide specialised inpatient and outpatient care that many patients currently seek outside the country.
Comprehensive mental healthcare services
Spread across 110,000 square feet, the hospital campus will include:
- 120 inpatient beds
- VIP inpatient villas for privacy and long-term recovery
- Dedicated neuro-rehabilitation wing
- Addiction recovery centre
- Child and adolescent psychiatry services
- Mood and anxiety disorder treatment units
- Thumbay Masjid open to the public
The facility is also targeting CARF accreditation, regarded globally as the benchmark for rehabilitation facilities.
Sharjah’s vision for holistic healthcare
Speaking during the event, H.E. Dr. Abdelaziz Saeed Al Mheiri stated that the project reflects Sharjah’s commitment towards building a healthcare ecosystem that addresses every dimension of human well-being.
He noted that mental health and rehabilitation have long required dedicated infrastructure and appreciated Thumbay Group for aligning with the Emirate’s healthcare vision.
Purpose-built facility focused on dignity and recovery
Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, said the institution has witnessed increasing conversations around mental health over the years.
He stated that many families have silently struggled with mental health challenges, and the new hospital has been designed specifically around dignity, recovery, and trusted healthcare outcomes.
According to him, the hospital is purpose-built for psychiatric and rehabilitation care rather than being a retrofitted healthcare facility.
Project timeline and future plans
Construction of the hospital is scheduled to begin in June 2026, with operations expected to commence by mid-2027.
Once completed, the hospital will become part of Thumbay Group’s expanding network of healthcare, education, and diagnostics institutions across the UAE, collectively serving hundreds of thousands of patients annually.
