Ajman, UAE: Thumbay Labs, one of the UAE’s largest academic diagnostic laboratory networks, has marked its 25th anniversary by earning the prestigious ISO 15189:2022 accreditation, further strengthening its position as a leading provider of diagnostic services in the Northern Emirates. The latest recognition complements the laboratory’s existing accreditation from the College of American Pathologists (CAP), placing Thumbay Labs among a select group of laboratories globally that hold both internationally recognised quality certifications.

A Journey of Growth and Excellence

Established in 2001 to support the healthcare services of Thumbay Group and the clinical training programmes of Gulf Medical University, Thumbay Labs has grown from a single laboratory into a network of five laboratories operating across the Northern Emirates.

Today, the network functions from a 25,000-square-foot diagnostic complex at Thumbay Medicity, Ajman, serving hospitals, clinics, healthcare professionals, and patients across the UAE. Over the past 25 years, Thumbay Labs has supported a healthcare system that has treated more than 19 million patients and assisted in the delivery of over 100,000 babies.

The laboratory network has conducted an estimated 30 million diagnostic tests for patients representing more than 175 nationalities, reflecting its extensive reach and contribution to healthcare delivery in the region.

Vital Role During the Pandemic

Thumbay Labs played a significant role during the COVID-19 pandemic, operating round-the-clock as a regional molecular testing centre. At its peak, the laboratory processed up to 15,000 tests per day, contributing to the country’s efforts to manage and contain the spread of the virus.

Its performance during the pandemic underscored the importance of advanced diagnostic infrastructure in supporting public health and timely clinical decision-making.

Significance of ISO 15189:2022 Accreditation

ISO 15189:2022 is the latest international standard specifically designed for medical laboratories. It evaluates quality management systems and technical competence across every stage of testing, from sample collection and processing to interpretation and reporting of results.

The accreditation confirms that Thumbay Labs meets internationally accepted benchmarks for accuracy, reliability, consistency, and patient safety. Combined with CAP accreditation, it reinforces the laboratory’s commitment to maintaining the highest standards in diagnostic medicine.

Comprehensive Diagnostic Services

Thumbay Labs offers a broad range of diagnostic services, including clinical chemistry, haematology, microbiology, molecular diagnostics, histopathology, occupational health screening, bioanalytical testing, and newborn screening.

Its newborn screening programme is among the largest in the Northern Emirates, helping identify genetic and metabolic disorders at an early stage. The network also supports medical research through a dedicated clinical research unit and maintains an independent quality assurance team across all its facilities.

Laboratories currently operate at Gulf Medical University and Thumbay Hospitals in Ajman, Dubai, and Fujairah, with a new facility planned for Abu Dhabi.

Expanding Digital and Home-Based Services

As part of its future growth strategy, Thumbay Labs is introducing mobile and web-based platforms that will allow patients to book tests, make payments, and access services online.

The laboratory’s home sample collection service is also being expanded to Abu Dhabi, making diagnostic testing more accessible and convenient for patients across the UAE.

Advancing Precision Diagnostics

Thumbay Labs is preparing to launch blood-based testing for Alzheimer’s disease, providing a less invasive alternative to spinal taps and PET scans. The test will screen for established biomarkers including ApoE4, pTau181, pTau217, and neurofilament light chain, enabling earlier and more accessible detection of the disease.

The laboratory is also advancing its Lab 5.0 initiative, integrating artificial intelligence, predictive analytics, automation, and advanced quality monitoring into diagnostic workflows. The initiative aims to transform diagnostics from a reactive healthcare service into a proactive tool for early disease detection and precision medicine.

Leadership Vision

Speaking on the milestone, Dr. Thumbay Moideen, Founder President of Thumbay Group, said the organisation remains committed to expanding its diagnostic footprint across the GCC and beyond.

He noted that the achievement reflects 25 years of dedication to building a trusted laboratory network while continuing to invest in innovation, quality healthcare services, and advanced diagnostic technologies.

As Thumbay Labs celebrates its silver jubilee year, the organisation continues to strengthen its role as a leader in diagnostic excellence, medical research, and healthcare innovation in the UAE and the wider Gulf region.
