Crackdown on Illegal Lottery and Gambling in Kodagu
Madikeri’s Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) R. Aishwarya underscored the urgency of eradicating illegal lottery sales and matka (gambling) activities in Kodagu district during a quarterly district-level flying squad meeting on Tuesday. The meeting focused on enforcing regulations to combat these unlawful practices.
Residents were urged to report any instances of illegal lotteries or gambling in their areas by contacting their local police station or dialing the committee’s helpline at 08272-228678. ADC Aishwarya stressed the need for regular inspections by the flying squad committee to monitor and curb such activities.
Officers from the commercial tax department were instructed to watch for illicit lottery sales during routine shop inspections. The ADC also emphasized maintaining vigilance, particularly in inter-state border areas where illegal activities may proliferate.
Additional Superintendent of Police K.S. Sundarraj reported significant action, with 49 cases of unauthorized lottery sales and six matka cases registered between January 2023 and September 2024 across district police stations. He highlighted enhanced police surveillance at border checkpoints.
The meeting also featured contributions from P. Sindhu, assistant director of the pension, small savings, and asset and debt management department, who provided detailed insights into the issue. Other attendees included Commercial Tax Inspector Dhanraj and Small Savings Department Development Officer Kumar.
This concerted effort reflects Kodagu’s commitment to curbing unlawful gambling and ensuring community well-being.
