A 30-year-old man from Kerala has been arrested by the Govindpura police for allegedly cheating a woman under the pretense of marriage and for sexually assaulting her. Bilal Rafeeq, a mechanic in the merchant navy from Kozhikode, is accused of forcing the woman to undergo two abortions.
The woman, a nurse from Chhattisgarh, reported that she met Rafeeq on Instagram in 2021, leading to a romantic relationship that quickly progressed to sexual intimacy, despite her objections. She became pregnant twice in 2022 and 2023 and was forced to abort both times. The FIR indicates that Rafeeq continued to assault her sexually during her stay at a PG accommodation from February to April 2024, resulting in a third pregnancy.
In August, the woman’s parents reportedly gave cash and valuables to Rafeeq at the insistence of his parents, as both families had agreed to their marriage. However, Rafeeq’s parents allegedly abused the woman in September, citing caste issues, and rejected the marriage proposal while threatening her.
A case has been registered against Rafeeq under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
